Poem Number 273
My Dictator

Commentary:
**My Dictator**
You back me into a corner
And you press me against the wall,
Smile your wicked grin
And laugh at the broken girl
Whose smile has so quickly vanished.
And if you wanted, you could destroy me;
You create a greedy sorrow
With your penetrating stare;
And with your sharp tongue
You transform me into a babe,
Whimpering and useless,
Lying beneath your shadow,
Fearing all who approach me.
And I wear your restraints
Like a horse wears a bridle,
And I toss my defiant head
But I do not leave your side.
And when I rebel,
You tighten the chains around my neck,
And leave me there all night,
Choking to my death.
And just before it ends,
Just before the darkness closes in,
You remember to set me free,
But only for a moment.
You will come back for me;
You will haunt me in my dreams.
And in my intoxicated state
I will accept your support,
And will allow the shackles to slip
Once more around the neck
Of a body which for too long has been
Suffocating under the control of a dictator.
