Poem Number 261
To the Stars and Back

Commentary:
Yesterday
An old man with
Sad eyes
Smiled at me
Reminded me of
all these things
I told myself
I didn't want.
I am haunted by
Kisses I thought
I had forgotten...
by words I regret
years later...
Memories no one else
Can understand because
They're the only memories
That really were just yours
And mine.
If I had known
You were hanging by a thread
I would have helped you down.
If I had known that my hugs
Mattered
I would have held on tighter.
If I had known you were so fragile
I would not be broken now.
No one wants to know
That once upon a time,
I loved you to the stars
And back again.
And no one ever will
Because you
Are silent now.

people know. and they know it matters. all that matters is that it matters to you. and how you hold on to the memories that remain. ~*~

this had a beauty all its own, Colette, i was left thinking of my relationships with the people i love and how maybe i need to listen closer.
