Poem Number 1943
On My Own All Alone
I try to call you on the phone
You voice mail answers
I try again
You don't answer once again
Maybe we wern't meant to be
or could this really be a dream

Commentary:
Standing alone
with tight chains
clasped around me.
There was nowhere to go.
I stood on sharp glass
barefoot thinking:
“Why do I deserve this?”
I tried walking around the glass,
but everywhere I stepped,
it was there
waiting for me
to bleed in pain
as they hovered over me with smiles.
I was confused wondering:
“What did I do wrong?”
Every move I made
the chains became tighter
and more secure
allowing me to not even breathe.
I was lost standing in a minefield
of shattered glass
barefoot,
all alone
and unable to move.
I was told I wasn’t good enough
for anyone or anything,
but I blocked that out
and built the strength up
to break the chains
that were built on my body
which weighed me down
for so long.
I was practically told
not to breathe,
but I did because I had to.
I was told not to wear shoes,
but I wore spikes anyway
crushing as many pieces
of shattered, sharp glass
as I could.
Every tiny piece
I crushed
was my way of revenge.
After a while I realized
that smothering the glass
was only making me
a weaker person.
and by that,
I was doing them a favor
and they became stronger.
So I ran.
I ran fast
away from my loneliness.
And that is what helped me
become so strong.
I now have scars from
the heavy chains
and sharp glass,
but it’s a remembrance
that I got away
on my own
all alone.
