Poem Number 1802
LITTLE CROSS
Somewhere in the darkness
Movement catches your eye
You swear you didn't see it
It grows stronger with the lie
It follows you in darkness
It sees into your soul
Someday soon what you deny
Will fill that empty hole
-
And it's dark, it's black
It's evil out there
I hide behind
This little cross I bear . . .
It's dark, it's black
It's something I can't face
I hide behind
The mercy of his grace
-
Dripping fangs lay waiting
Scaled claw reaches for your heart
You cling to the remnants
Of a life that fell apart
You refuse to be a servant
You thought you'd stand alone
No angel wings protecting you
And no way to get home
-
And it's dark, it's black
It's evil out there
I hide behind
This little cross I bear . . .
It's dark, it's black
It's something I can't face
I hide behind
The mercy of his grace
-
Somedays I don't see you
But every night I pray
That God, in his greatness
Will take your demon away
-
And it's dark, it's black
It's evil out there
I hide behind
This little cross I bear . . .
It's dark, it's black
It's something I can't face
I hide behind
The mercy of his grace . . .

Commentary:
It's supposed to be a song, and it loses a bit without the tune, but what do y'all think?

-------
I have a tune in my head when I read it, but the chorus is what I like: "And it's dark, it's black..." I think that lines 17-24 and 33-36 take away from the excellence of the poem because they just don't seem to have the 'heart' that the rest of it does. Maybe you could run with those lines, though, and write another poem...just a thought. Other than that, of course, I love your writing, and I'm not trying to be some know-it-all or anything.
