Poem Number 174
I saw a smile
just yesterday
behind smoky grey eyes
and nibbling lips
of his breakfast-to-go bagel and cream cheese
with a tall latte in tow
what was he reading, understanding
behind those silver-rimmed glasses
that he didn't even realize a snow white morsel
was hanging on for its dear life on the edge of his lower lip?
i heard him chuckle ... or was it a boyish giggle? ...
above the raucous of the train and gossip flying around
i wished i could read over his shoulder
and join in with the fun
instead ...
"excuse me, i think you might need this napkin ..."
nabbing the little lip-hanger
and finding myself
taking his smile home with me
when he handed me
the digits to his cellphone.
I threw it away, didn't want to rescue him from future falling bagels
