Poem Number 272
Slipping off the edge
But you can only fall so far
So why do you hang onto the ledge?
Down below is only a scar
Heavens great, if you like boring
down below, the parties roaring
a leap of faith? Here's a warning
this is all there is
No pearly gates. No fire. No snakes.
No second life, for goodness sakes
Got no Karma, good or bad.
This life is it Folks. It's all we have.
I'd climb off that ledge, if I were you
Man is but mortal. His days are few.
No angels to guard him. No devils to tempt.
No bugles. No judgement. No need to repent.
No condemnation. No resurrection.
No one to pray to when we need protection.
Still, man lifts up his soul, to a higher power.
In hopes of forgiveness at his final hour.
Why? What drive us to seek a divine?
Perhaps it is the look I find in this mirror of mine
Is the image I seem my own relfection,
Or is it merely one of divine delfection?

Commentary:
