Poem Number 987
Passing Whispers
Commentary:
Passing Whispers
The events of the day echo through her
And again her mind wanders the halls
Of the grim and the sickly discardings
Of death between hospital walls
She'd been there when the doctors discovered
The truth of her illness that day
And they spoke as if she were no longer
Then casually strolled away
She dressed and collected her things
Made a mental note of the date
There was no one left to be notified
As her kin had all suffered her fate
Sitting on the curb by the corner
Her head held in her hands
She shrinks with each passing whisper
With the weight of their words she stands
They snicker and point as they pass her
She knows that they know not the truth
But it matters not why they taunt her
For the matter lies only in youth
A youth that she'll not long hold on to
For numbered are her days to shine
And when the grey earth does consume her
Only rumors will be left behind
With her sack slung over one shoulder
She seeks a new home, a new name
Where no one will know or remember
From where or from what she came
With the time she has left she'll discover
The purpose and what it all means
And if someone should see and accept her
She'll share with them what she dreams
For the more she shares with others
The more she'll take with her to sleep
And the love that she leaves behind her
Will forever be hers to keep
