Poem Number 1157
A wondrous thing is a fish that flies
out of the pan, back to where it came from.
the whole school of them,
wombsick, roe upon roe,
When you jump behind the counter
my heart squirms and thumps
as you ignore customers to reel me in
As God blesses America I hope He doesn't forget me
though an atheist I'm known to curl at your feet
I want to be free, each day a chosen moment
to get closer to your heartbeat
If you were 10 years older you'd be exactly what I need
a snug glove of wooley cuff,
warm as whiskey against a hard dark stab in the back
seat of my old man's muscle car.
Wheels that fly, propellers at full blast
a cat in the throat, and a mouse on cumulus nimbus
We will swim in a pool of disaster
if this love never ends as in the movies
where heroines find love then make babies
and husbands take out the garbage bags.
...
Let's get back to that wonderous thing
a flying fish, keeping our relationship in the dark.
The date remain blind, the ocean absorbs all the sunlight
but leap and break the oily skin of sea
and a thousand small moons reflect,
one each, in each and every scale,
universe revealed, unveiled.
The story is kept in a net as some kind of record
torn between escape and settling on the reef
zapping storms from one channel to another
I thought we were there for good, anchored in our freedom
our state of unrestraint, yet it led us into rip-tides,
cross-currents and angry waves battering at sea-stacks.
I want to see with you as clarity speeks approval
climb into your skin stretching limbs sprouting wings,
leaving these alluvial plains.
the blind climb cliffs hanging towards the water
where jumping fish claim to know better
"Fly like we", they sing , "We'll treat you so well."
