Poem Number 1157
A dog sits waiting in the cold autumn sun,
Too faithful to leave, too frightened to run.
to frightened to bark, to frightened to cry.
sittin outside, hearing the bacon fry
cold air surrounding,
howlin' cause he's sittin' on a thorn
too durned scared to move over
Commentary:
Sounds like the dog that sits on the tucker box.

what is that?

If it's anything like Pandora's Box, stay Fido, stay.
-------
The story goes that an explorer in Australia left his dog sitting on the tucker box (box of supplies) to guard it while the explorer went to explore. He never returned and later they found the dog dead on the tucker box faithfully guarding it. So they built a monument to the dog. It is near the town of Gundigai (can't spell it). An Australian friend told me this story and taught me a couple songs about it. There seem to be a number of versions of the story.

that's interesting :)
