Poem Number 193
stray dog, trembling
Far beneath the smile of man
coaxing hand mistrusts

Authors--I keep returning to this Haiku. It so reminds me of our
youngest dog--part Husky part German Shepherd. My daughter adopted
her from SPCA. She had been a run away-stray picked up by police.
She was afraid of lots of things-including big knifes and cellars.
She still won't go down there. It shatters the heart and mind to
realize how some hands can treat such creatures. ___ThisThing___63

I agree. The saddest thing is trying to reconstruct a trusting relationship with a creature that has learned to understand and anticipate only pain. I have an Arabian horse with such issues; she is so afraid of being alone with a human being that lots of intuitive and consistent communication is a necessity. ---kgb

Thing: found haiku:
}Shepherd-Husky mix,
}loved, its past unknown, still fears
}big knives and cellars.
It's hard with animals. People have words, but animals bring it home that ultimately it is the act that counts; and even dogs and horses are, heartbreakingly, agents unto themselves. --eritain, who used the wrong words there, he's afraid
-------
EritainI love the Haiku you wrote for Sabrina. I accidently found out
she was scared of big knifes one day when I was cutting up meat and had
the knife pointing out--not threatening to her. She jumped and ran and
needed much encouragement. She's so beautiful-one watch eye one brown
with the normal white husky face. She's our car dog.
kgb::My daughter's horse is full blood Arabian-gelded--we board.
Thanks to both of you for your comments. ___ThisThing___63

The week my husband moved out, a stray golden lab showed up literally on my
doorstep. He had no collar. I checked the want ads and posted signs, but noone
has claimed him. He has never barked in 6 weeks, he is afraid if you try to
pet him near the face, and trembles if my children are too loud. I believe
that he must have been abused and probably dropped off since we live by a park.
He had been a God-send to us. Suddenly finding myself alone, I feel safer
with him here. He is very calm spirited and loving, and very obedient, a great
dog. I am convinced that he was sent to us for a reason. My children have really
grown attached to him, and he to them. We seem to fulfill a need within each other.

QuicheMarie~~I'm so glad our God knows what we have need of. Thing___

Thing: I would swear, weird though it sounds, that I have seen that dog. We were travelling, down in Utah near Bryce Canyon; stopped at a little bed-and-breakfast and cooked dinner on a picnic table, and were visited time and again by a dog: eyes as you have said, and a Husky look but not quite, and soaking up love like a dry sponge. She was very submissive, especially to my tall, redheaded brother. The owner came and got her: not a kind man, shouting and kicking. So sad.
Marie: Your dog is a treasure. I wish I could sit by him at the top of some stairs or somewhere and maybe brush my fingers down that lovely fur. --eritain
-------
note of sadness: the stray dog that we cared for for a month has now disappeared.
The gate to our backyard was opened, so I assume he broke out and ran off(?) We
searched, but never found him. He left yesterday, and our snowstorm started
last night. 12" are expected before nightfall tonight. We have 6-8" now. I
pray the little darling is safe somewhere...my children are very sad, as I am
also. So, eritain, I also would love to sit and brush my finger through his
lovely fur once more...a grieving QuicheMarie

Quiche`Marie & 3 MiniQuiches::Have asked God to protect your loving dog.
