preferred foods. For an inexpensive meal (cut in cubes with noodles and
creamed soup) it's not half-bad.Besides, I grew up on pork. My Dad used
to butcher every November before the holidays. Once in a while we had beef.

Sorry, MT, it was me who started the Spam-o-rama. I became a vegetarian at age 12 and didn't eat any meat again until I was pregnant with my daughter and near death. The doctor convinced me that some protein would help sustain us. Now I am semi-vegetarian, occassionally eating poultry to continue the benefits of the added protein. But....I could never bring myself to dine on what was inside that little blue can. It's not only pork in there, but a little something called sodium nitrate that I would rather avoid. I could get on my soap box against preservatives and food coloring, oh, and the overuse of antibiotics and how mankind is destroying itself and depleting Mother Earth, but I will, for now, spare you from that. ~Q~

During WWII, my dad says, they used to supplement the dry K-rations with - you guessed it - Spam. After the war, he wouldn't allow Spam in the house. I'm too young to know about Ks, and my experience with C-rations and LRRPs is another subject entirely........bkay

Spam was actually developed in 1926, GT, as a convenience food (Spam, good cold or hot). It did save lives during the war since beef was rationed and pork was not, and because of it's convenience ~~ for all of the boys in combat, not just the Americans. I really do belong to the Official Spam Fanclub, btw. My belief is that we should eat as close to the Creator intended us to eat in order to have the best health. We weren't intended to eat preserved foods, but to graze from the land. However, when we are placed under circumstances where it is impossible, then we have to do what we have to do to survive. When I first left my husband, my children were used to eating all organic food, freshly prepared by moi. We found ourselves eating out of a food bank....where no man should go unless starving. Going from organic foods to canned foods with the expiration date long retired and food color treated and sugar laden God-knows-whats was an adjustment my family had to make for awhile. It was that or go hungry. So, apparently there is a place for preservatives....war....divorce...survival....But in everyday life, I'll opt for a salad over Spam anytime. ~Q~

well, re: the water discussion... check out these ingredients: water, magnesium sulfate, potassium chloride, salt. These are the ingredients in Dasani "purified" water!!! So much for pure. I'm sorry, but it strikes me that we shouldn't have to check the label of our WATER to find out if it has SALT!!!.......grrrrrr............ ginny

(i thought this was a Spam discussion)You know, I have found that the best foods are those that come without labels, but when I do buy labeled foods, I ALWAYS read them. You'd be surprised at how many hidden ingredients you'll find. I found red food coloring in ketchup. I guess the tomatoes weren't red enough. Salt in water? Ridiculous, so that is what purifies it? Its amazing what we do to our water supply....Here we are in the Great Lakes and we can't drink, swim in or eat fish out of our water. ~Q~
