Is a haiku supposed to have a hokey zenarchist thing to it, or can they be hateful and full of evil spirits like this? How do the Japanese say haiku should proceed? Undaunted . . . Caindaemon

I'm not an expert on haiku by any means, but I believe the Japanese school stresses the theme of nature & the seasons concretely sketched; or maybe some little snapshot of the human condition, again in concrete form. It must be 17 syls, broken 5-7-5. English haiku is much looser in structure, since the sort of pithiness one strives for can be achieved in fewer than 17 syls. In these pages too, we write about what we like to write about. Perhaps strictly speaking, we do not write "haiku" here. I personally think the distinction is a little arbitrary and not that important. If it's concise & sincere, it belongs here. IMHO......RAS

cd--i'm far from an authority on haiku but this room tends to deviate from the tradtitional japanese subjects and venture into pretty much anything that elicits an emotional response. i believe the tradition would be to describe something in nature that moves you. in this room we kind of play with the structure and format and subject matter. i enjoyed your visit to the dark side and thank you for writing about it. i am no angel myself. keep pushing the limits....david

English speaking writers have been diverging from the traditional "courtly" style of Haiku for years. The only rule I follow is the five-seven-five and some don't even bother with that anymore. It's a new transcendant form in English but Basho et. al can't be knocked either. - Chikuba Madman

I like it a lot. what an avenue: Reminds me of the sparseness of words I see in Kafka sometimes. I always improvise them.CD
