Poem Number 3872
punksitawny phil
and dunkirk dave detect sun
spring indicators?
Commentary:
After my little son, Emilio(3 yrs) came home from pre-school...armed with the knowledge of Groundhog Day, he wanted me to take him to see one...We live in Colorado...I don't think they even live here, so I took him to see the neighborhood prairie dog village...with about 8" of snow leftover from the weekend there were none to be seen...I told him that they had to stay inside and keep warm. He was satisfied for now, but I bet he'll expect his Daddy to take him back today to see if they came out!...~Green
-------
Oh well!!(big sigh) We made it through most of the day with not shadow but
from about 3-3:30 if was cloudless right over us. I guess that means no early
spring for GrandmaThing's garden. We'll have to get them planted inside.--
GrandmaThing--May you know love. They are the same animal, huh green? My
girl loves the little guys.
-------
I was wrong! Woodchucks and groundhogs are the same.--GT
-------
i've heard 'em called whistlepigs, too.........RAS
-------
okay! okay! what on earth is Groundhog Day?....alice
-------
LOL, it's Feb 2, alice. On that day the groundhog/woodchuck/whistlepig/marmot-thing supposedly emerges from his burrow. If he sees his shadow, it frightens him back inside for another 6 weeks of winter; if not, we get an early spring. Somewhere along the way a Philadelphia tv station adopted a tame woodchuck named Punxatawny (sp?) Phil and started the tradition of rousing him & filming his response every Feb 2. His "predictions" are probably no worse than NOAA's.......RAS
-------
RAS:: If someone grabbed you out of your burrow by the scruff of the neck
wouldn't you scurry right back inside too?? At least where I am the snow
is all melted but ice is formed again.--GT--Know love!
-------
That I would, GT. Alas, we've still got snow AND ice... but it isn't quite so dark when I leave work now, and before long the sun will still be up at 5:00. Next milestone: an entire evening commute without using my headlights!..........RAS
-------
Well now, if you moved to Michigan, you could drive till 7 without the headlights...
