Poem Number 3749
Fetch now son, the gamper lathers
The lathers he leaves on the trees
Get them now for nothing else matters
Fetch now son, the gamper lathers
Hurry out yonder before the tax man gathers
Or he'll take each one and leave us all fees
Fetch now son, the gamper lathers
The lathers he leaves on the trees
Commentary:
What are the "gamper lathers"? I've searched the internet and come up empty-handed.
-------
I find this intriguing. I have returned to this page time and again to mull this one over.
-------
A charming rural tax revolt melody?
-------
How I read this one is: I hold no fault with ol' Gamper for speaking his mind son, but having his printed propaganda found openly displayed about our property will no doubt get us arrested and fined by the Sheriff of Nottinghamshire, albeit eh?
just as a driven horse works itself up into a lather, even so does gamper in printing out his bulletins, therefore you've elected to use the term [gamper lathers] am i not correct? and was it not s.t. who wrote this? something in the articulation makes it seem so to me.
-------
No, it is not S.T. who wrote this.
-------
Well, whoever the author is, Thanks for sharing. :)
-------
You're most welcome :)
