Poem Number 831
THE WIND
Commentary:
Rain! Gentle rain, falling outside my window
I realize that I must be lying here awake
Now, there it is, awful wind starting to blow
In the darkness I am afraid to open my eyes.
I remember when I was a small child and alone
that there were real monsters in my room
Hiding in the closet and sometimes under my bed
They would appear in the wind, rain and gloom.
Is that the wind? That strange sound I heard.
What is that cold rubbing softly against my face?
Should I open one eye in my childish fear,
or should I pull the covers tight over my head?
No! I am an adult now; I must face all my fears.
Quickly, off with the covers, and I flip on the light.
The curtain blowing against my face that is all it was.
But, what’s that laughter from my closet in the dark night?
