Poem Number 799
OLD TIMER

Commentary:

Well, I got pains here and there
this old ground is getting harder
I reckon that life just ain’t fair.
I guess this is my last cattle drive.

I find myself lying nearer the evening fire,
And praying I don’t draw night herd.
My saddle seems harder than it use to,
And "time to go" ain't my favorite word.

I reckon I have swallowed to much dust.
Too many times I haven ridden drag.
Too many of onry steer have I cussed.
Too many a mustang I have had to break.

Too many trails have I finished with a bottle.
I seen too much blood on the sawdust floor,
Sometime it has been from me.
Too many young women for me to adore.

I reckon that my time here on Earth is about done
I seen a lot of things, and had a good hoss or two
Ever now and then I even had some fun
I will go to sleep and hope I wake, if not, ain't no loss.
