Poem Number 794
THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER

Commentary:
Back in that nasty cold snap of '42, when it got so blamed cold,
Me and the boys were stuck in the bunkhouse with nothing to do.
Billy got to talking one day about a story he heard about Mexican gold.
They said it was there in plain sight, color just lying on the ground.

I didn't put much stock in the story, but at least it would be warm!
We drew our pay, saddled up, and headed south without a care.
We fought so much bitter wind and falling snow we almost forgot the gold.
We had forgotten there’s two thousand miles of winter between here and there.

We rode on down to Utah, where it was warmer, but it's a really strange place.
Some of them fellers down there figure that a man needs more than one wife.
Charlie got to flirting with this pretty young thing, pretty as she could be.
It was an old man’s youngest wife and Charlie was lucky to escape with his life.

We went down through the Arizona desert, down across the old Rio Grande.
We searched all over for that gold they said was lying loose on the ground.
My hands are cut and bleeding from working on the dredge, in the river's sand.
After three long years of working, that Mexican gold we could not find.

The only thing we found was iron pyrite, purdiest gold color I had ever seen.
Billy cussed, "Fools gold is the only gold that old fools like us will ever find".
Seems there’s been a slight change in plans, now we eating tortillas and beans.
Riding a ten-dollar nag and punching Mexican cows for $20 a month and keep.
