Poem Number 789
THE PLUMMER GANG

Commentary:

Henry Plummer came from Virginia one dark, sad day.
He bought a bordello where he and his friend could play.
He shot a man over a woman, for whom the man didn’t pay.
That must have been what started his murderous reign.

He settled down in Bannack where he became the only law.
I don’t think it was because the town folks respected him,
it was because he was cussed mean and had a lightning draw.
The miners would find gold and leave town, but never to return.

The Plummer gang was the deadliest bunch the Old West could hold,
killing over two hundred miners, stealing their hard-earned Polk.
Clubfoot George was their spy in Virginia City, watching for gold.
Until the Vigilantes figured it was time for them to become the law.

Well, they hung Clubfoot George and started cleaning house.
They gave a bunch of them a warning with writing on the door.
3-7-77 the dimensions of a grave. Those that scoffed it off would die.
When they caught up with Plummer, well a legend started to soar.

They say that when they went to hang him, he had one last request,
"If you let me go, I will return by nightfall with my weight in gold."
They dropped the trap, and Plummer and his gold were laid to rest.
The legend says the gold is still there, buried somewhere close to town.

Before you get the greed and head up to that Montana town,
there is another part of this old legend that is not often told.
They say the treasure is within a half a day’s ride from Bannack,
but the Ghost of Henry and the boys are sitting on the gold.

THIS IS ANOTHER TRUE STORY EXCEPT THE LAST LINE, AND WHO KNOWS.
This is where the Vigilantes started In Virginia city. they would write
3-7-77 on your door in blood. If it happened to you, you had better leave fast. You see that is 3foot wide, 7 feet long and 77inches deep, the size of a grave. And if you add it up 3+7+7+7 it gives you 24 hrs to get out of town. The Plummer gang killed everyone that they robbed. (No Witness). You can still see the old gold trail down the mountain from Virginia City mines to the smelter at Three Forks. They had a spy in Virginia city that told them when the wagons of the rich miners was leaving. Then the gang would come in From Bannack (The first State Capital). They would meet at robbers roost and go do their dastardly deed,
and then return to Bannack.

-------
Cool. Lots of history down there. We've got some miner's tales and stuff from the gold rush. But Canada is a MUCH younger country than your nation :)
-------
I would like to hear some of them, put them in poem form and send them out
