Poem Number 788
DEAD MANS GULCH

Commentary:
Well, I made camp up here in grove of aspen trees,
About a half mile from Dead-Man’s gulch.
I’m sitting here by the fire, staying out of the breeze.
There are strange stories about the happenings here abouts.

You know, Cowpokes seeing things that just ain’t around.
Sometimes they hear cattle that just plain ain’t there,
and folk’s claims to have seen strangers riding by in the night.
I’ll tell you friend, them tails are enough to flat curl your hair.

As for me I don’t believe in nothing I don’t see with my eyes.
Some just like to stretch the truth a might to make them a hero.
I ain’t got no time to listen to their wild stories and their lies.
I’m rolled here in my blanket, watching the fire slowly start to die.

I hear the sound of a heard coming out of Dead –Man’s gulch.
Saint Elmo’s fire on their horns, strangest thing I ever did see.
Sparks flew from the horses hoofs that was chasing them,
and through their bodies, I could still see rock and tree.

Well, Pardoner, I will never again doubt what I here about this place.
I saddled up and kicked out the fire, I reckon I camp elsewhere.
I don’t reckon moving camp in this case is such a disgrace.
Besides I don’t think I will get too much sleep, after what I just saw.

I don’t figure your going to take my tail as true; I don’t blame you none.
I know it is true, I know what saw that strange night that gave me a scare.
So if you don’t believe the story of Dead-Man’s gulch I don’t much care,
But next time you see me, would you to explain where I got this white hair.

There is a place in Montana near Dillon called "Dead Mans Gulch" The story goes that there were three riders bring 30 head of cattle from Butte in 1856. They were long over due, so thet went out looking for them. They found 30 head of cattle, three riders and their horses all laying dead. There was no apparent reason for their death. So it was know there after as "Dead Mans Gulch" In later years they figured they got into some bad water.

Strange stuff. Could be they encountered an area of zero oxygen. Only takes seconds to die. We had four guys die that way. I've been thinking about how in simpler times the mysterious deaths may have been considered done by malevolent spirits, or something super natural. Now with scientific techniques we know what actually happened -- while the cause of the site's oxygen deprivation remains under investigation.

Thanks for another unique tale :)

sometimes truth is stranger that fiction, who kown you might be right.
Down in a gulch that way it could have been O oxygen. Who Knows??????
