Poem Number 787
LIFE OF A COWBOY
Commentary:
The only fun a cowhand has is in his head.
Mending fences or chasing them steers.
Most of all it’s the drives I truly dread,
I get stuck on drag with the dust, and smell
Yep! It’s fun sleeping under the bright stars.
Sleeping on a sweaty saddle blanket at night.
Your head on the saddle where you had the other end.
Somehow the excitement and fun seem to take flight.
You get to lie on the rocks and the hard ground.
You sleep out in the wind and the rain.
You lie behind a tree branch the wind changes round,
More rain in your slicker than on the outside.
And you can’t forget my trusty six shooter,
A pound and a half of pig iron on my side.
Charlie shot a snake last week and started a stampede
Took us three days to round them up, ten head died.
Yep! The life of a cowhand that is for me, YAHOO!
Going to town to paint it red, got enough for two beers.
Took a bath in the river, and almost drown this buckaroo.
Yep! The glorious life of a cowhand is so much fun.
