Poem Number 786
GETTING LUCKY
Commentary:
I rode easy in the Sunday afternoon sun.
My pony prancing along the soft dirt road.
As I rode, I made up a song just for fun,
about the life of a cowboy wild and free.
I stepped down off my pony at the rail,
Took off my gun, and hung it on the horn.
I reached deep down in my left saddle bag.
Pulling out my prize, which looked forlorn.
I walked down the walk of cobble-stones,
Flowers in one hand and hat in the other.
But even as she met me, I felt empty and alone,
For I alone knew of my devious intentions.
We swang on the old porch swing to and fro.
I knew that somehow I had to get her in the house.
Her mother came to the front door with a smile,
"Dinner is on, can you stay?" Boy ,I felt like a louse.
They had sundy dinner with all the trimmings.
Beef roast,lamb chops,ham,taters,and gravy.
You see that's what I wanted,I can always find women,
but tonight I ain't got to eat cookies, hardtack, and beans.
