Poem Number 333
HANGING UP THE SADDLE

Commentary:
Well I have chased cows down many a long trail
Filled my lungs with stink and dust from riding drag
Calming down the herd in thunder storms and hail
Spent many a dark night singing to the herd

But I don’t recon that it has been such a bad life
My belly have always been full of biscuits and bean
Old Blue and I have been together for 20 years.
And I recon people would pay to see what I have seen.

Well, in my time I have saved up a little money.
I figured I might get a shack somewhere in the mountains.
I figure old Blue and I might retire, Boy, that sound funny.
I been pushing cows forty years and Blue has helped for twenty.

Maybe we could sit around and go hunting or fishing
I knew that it would come; old age is one of my greatest fears.
I been sitting here watching the embers burn, and listing to the herd.
Blue and I’ve been talking and we decided we’d wait a few more years.
