Poem Number 421
ThTHE MANSION BY THE TRACKS

Commentary:
The kids say the old mansion is haunted and full of ghosts
If so it is only haunted by memories of a glorious past
Sharp memories of the fine soirees Mrs. Wilcox used to host
Her husband had built the mansion as a wedding present in 1885
Just ten short years later, Annie had passed away in childbirth.
Leaving a beautiful dark haired angel to be raised by her dad.
She was more at home in buckskin tending cattle than in calico.
Billy won her heart; it was the biggest wedding the town ever had.
Billy and Mary were blessed with three children a girl and two boys
The old mansion again rocked with life, laughter and true joy
The young girl was sent off to boarding school to learn grace and poise
That when the railroad came to town, ant the town started to boom.
Well! The train took Jimmy the oldest boy off to war in nineteen forty-two
then it brought him home again in a casket in nineteen forty-four.
Susie was struck down by a speeding car and it took her young life
the youngest boy Bob, hopped a freight train and was heard of no more.
Billy and Mary just sat on the front porch and rocked their lives away.
Now the whole family is together again in the graveyard on the hill.
The windows are broken and the old heavy curtains are in total disarray
the picket fence the once shined in the sun now weathered and broken down.
The mansion haunted? No! Only by memories of a long forgotten past.
The kids claim to sometimes see a ghost in the window and hear him sob.
You probable wonder how I know all the history of Old Wilcox Mansion.
The Ghost is no mystery, for I came home to die, you see I am Bob.
