Poem Number 23305
I am blushing and embarrassed when you sit down
on that barstool next to me and open your tattered
copy of Plato's Symposium. I have only read the Apology, but
I know you want to talk about love in all of it's forms.
I've seen platonic relationships unfold through telescopes,
and never binoculars. I've wandered the Island of Cyclops, but
never crawled under the sheep.
Writing it's instead of its, it is clear that I'm unnerved.
I want to tell you about Xanthippe. I played her in a little skit once,
in a college seminar, the best acting I ever did,
and then I wrote a letter to you.
Sincerely, your young and clumsy shrew.
