Poem Number 23234
I am an elephant dreaming of becoming a girl
with five fingers on each hand, opening to the night sky like stars,
I am an elephant dreaming.
I am an architect of underground caverns, carving skylights with stalactites,
scattering bats and watching the people gather,
I am an architect underground.
I am nothing spiritual, I am nothing magical.
I have become death, the shatterer of worlds.
---
I am your mother, wearing a sweater and scarf in the winter,
holding your hands to my face to warm them. I spread mulch in the garden
though nothing is blooming. I am your mother, wearing a sweater.
I am your mother, feeding the squirrels in the backyard
just as the sun sets. I scatter apples and sunflower seeds.
You twirl a maple seed fallen for months.
I say I love you and you say I know--here is the magic
of everyday life.
I say I love you again.
