Poem Number 23045
an imagining
Commentary:
she is sitting on the roof
her back to the
lift motor room
her arms, embracing her legs
in the frigid air.
but she is bathed in sunlight,
her eyes tenderly shut,
hearing the displaced air
of cars driving past
in the street below;
children's chatter carried
by the wind (it must be recess)
soon it will be eleven
she imagines the nearby churchbells
will chime eleven times,
and all will return to silence.
all that remains
is the light, unseen.
