is always fun

i twisted my neck
and broke my
eyes away
from the
holiday themes,
to stare, as if in a contest,
into the black and lashed
eyes of a squirrel
perched outside my front window,
who, it would seem,
was unaware of
christmas generosity
as he greedily
gulped all of
the seed left for the
perched birds, who
mournfully
awaited his leave
