History Repeats, Repeats Itself

Commentary:
History Repeats, Repeats Itself
Awake at three am again
with nothing to help me sleep:
no cocoa, no old films of war,
for instance Iwo Jima or Waterloo -
I’ve met mine and lost so long ago.
In this gloom that divides me from
the morning, I lost again. In this photo
I’m in Paris, you are too. The Tour d’Eiffel stands,
one grand middle finger, erect,
or were you just glad to see me?
Josephine, until you stumbled
you had your Bonaparte, your passion,
and your good Fortune, too.
His nails tapped secret love spells
down the hall and back, from him
to you, blue ribbons trailing his neck.
And, you know, I did too, until, like you,
I awoke to find nothing left of that dream
but cold coffee, new lovers and no mute or music
To stifle his goodbye.

I apologize for the repeat; not sure how I did that! Still, fitting, I suppose, given the title. MG

I loved the first half of this poem. The second half lost me completely, or maybe just took me in a totally different direction than I expected.
I had to laugh at the repeat. I thought the title was fitting as well. ms.
-------
As for me, I like the whole poem. I didn't get lost. However, I would take out the first two lines. It's been said before by someone else and it is unncessary to the poem.

-------
I meant I would omit the first line. Not the first TWO lines.
