Oregon
Within a mile of the border
you will start to notice how
light changes its habit
here;
But hangs on trees differently,
caresses rocks left-handedly,
as though coming from an
angle we do not know.
Somehow, crusts are chipped,
films wiped,
Patinas and varnishes rubbed
away,
like a fresh scrubbed face does
the land come to us;
teaching our eyes new seeing.
In the mountains it is golden,
dusting the eagles bright
helmet.
On the sea, shrimp boats receive
its silver light,
The fields are a green beyond
greening,
the clouds white against blue
on blue.
There is no other light like this;
Only Oregon.
