Commentary:
*Remembrance*
-
Once I was a waterfall,
free and clear,
With my waters
strongly flowing
then breaking
on the jagged
rocks below.
~
My body
teaming with
life that
in turn,
depended on me
to survive.
~
I was a beautiful
sight to behold,
though I struck
fear in the
hearts of many
and sheer thrill
into others, who
placed me at the
center of their
dreams of a
paradise in which
everything
was perfect.
Yet I was not.
~
The choice
between life
and death was
not mine
to make.
And sometimes
innocent people
would lose balance
and get caught
in my raging waters.
And I, myself was
helpless.
~
Unable to change
the direction of
my current,
and unable to
save even those
that deserved
to be saved.
~
Some scorned me,
and threw their
wastes upon my
waters.
Slowly killing
the life from
within me,
forcing me to feed
my own children
poisoin.
~
Then one day
I was deemed unfit.
And men with
yellow hats came
to seal my mouth
closed.
And they did.
And the life I
tryed so hard
to nurture
had been killed.
And so had I.
~
So even though
I may not be
the beautiful
sight to behold
anymore,
I remember
when I once
was a waterfall
free and clear
~

Yes, this is truly beautiful. I think one of your best. A fantastic perspective and a very sad commentary on how we treat our environment. I love the part about people losing their balance. A really neat poem. -jeffh

not only a beautifully written poem, but a environmental statement as well...I remember when I was a kid we went to Lake Eerie one summer and it was so polluted...dead fish lying on the shore everywhere and the water had a strange foamy look...we didn't go in the water! That was a luckier body of water than yours tho, for it did get cleaned up...great poem! m.e.
