Rome, you overwhelm me
monument to religion and myth
after monument of war and glory
ruins in marble next to graffiti covered bridges
next to slums and filled with people
Rome, you overwhelm me
a living city living in some ghost town
with your soulless statues
and spiritless churches
next to slums and filled with people
Rome you hold great art in your fingertips
and blood and terror in your history
Rome, why are you so big
and why am I so empty?
Can I not compare to your busy way?

i just watched a documentary on rome--you captured many facets of it in your poem--window watcher

did you guys watch Rome week on TLC too? hee hee hee. Good poem though. With all the supposed greatness of Rome, what did it truely accomplish? A pile of rubble....

Ahh--but, it was the model for our own republic, it united the world of that time through its road system, and lasted for almost 500 years. True there is not much left of the "Glory that once was Rome" now, but, neither is there much left of the glory of ancient Greece or Egypt. JFC
