allan, i enjoy your writing and would like to learn more about haiku. could you tell me what Basho haiku is? I've seen you mention it before. are there specific syllable patterns to follow? It seems quite awesome to create such vivid images in such short lines...ms

i agree with that, ms. i try to think of sentences such as these, but it doesn't seem to work. it's an admirable form of poetry to be sure... :)justme

thank you friends, for your kind feedback -
to ms : Matsuo Basho (1644-99) is the poet who in the early Edo period of Japan lifted the hokku (5-7-5) part of linked Renga verse into the modern Haiku form; he travelled the isles of the empire as as a zen monk, and wrote some beautiful travel sketches, including many haiku. Among these is 'The narrow road to the north' where he writes :
... I arrived at Hiraizumi after wandering some twenty miles in two days. It is here that the glory of the three generations of the Fujiwara family passed away like a snatch of empty dream... When a country is defeated, there remains only mountains and rivers, and on a ruined castle in spring only grasses thrive. I sat down on my hat and wept bitterly till i almost forgot time.
