`
Dirt Road~
Commentary:
I've heard that
it keeps going
forever,
somehow manages to
stretch itself
beyond
the boundaries that
apply to any
normal dirt road.
as a boy,
i'd always lay
along side the
beggining of the road, off
in the thick bristled
grass that grows up
out of the pale red
earth,
i'd just lie there for
hours, wondering how many
feet had crossed the path
that lay before me.
the road itself wasn't
red though,
it was a kind of
faded yellow,
almost a
gold,
makes you wonder
if maybe at one time it
was gold,
kind of like one of those
roads up in heaven.
once,
when i was hiding
under the back porch
of my grandpa's store,
i heard him and the
town counselmen talking
about paving over the road
with concrete,
he said if it ever
came time to shame the
only thing left in our
town that could remind us of
our heritage, then
they would have to pave
him over with concrete
too.
it didn't really
hit me hard at the time,
but later on when i asked
him about it, he said that
my grandpa two generations
back had been one of the men
to cut the first trees to
clear that road.
after that,
i decided that some
day i would take
it upon myself to walk
the entire length of that
road.
Today is that
day.
and so,
as it has countless
times before, the begginning
of our
dirt road lays
before me,
only this time,
....i will see the end.
