Poem Number 22995
in broad daylight
Commentary:
So maybe looking back,
my culture was smashed,
didn't have a strong dad,
but I had a strong back
that was tired of the lash
but that doesn't excuse
the fact that I wasn't confused,
I used every tool at my disposal
because I didn't want to lose
my self respect, my integrity
If I had to choose again,
I would suffer these blues
with even less pity
and you don't know,
so shut your mouth
what it's like
to send a soul flying
on a one way ticket
down south
so ask your questions,
but you don't know nothin'
nobody saw it coming
a man with a gun
in broad daylight
shoots three people,
then walks away
news at eleven
you threaten heaven,
i say who cares
take the stairs,
endure the stares of
history
they always look at you funny,
doubt
but they weren't there
they didn't hear
the sound of fear calling your name
when you don't have courage to spare
the feeling of
looking down the double barrels
of a shotgun
aimed right at your family's head
what's left to do after that
but leave em dead
where they fall
it's nothing
really,
it's nothing at all.

I like the way this builds and the way the repetition of "it's nothing" etc., draws the reader into the story -- well done, o!!
