Poem Number 23134

unity: a mob, a march, a parade
of populists, a moving garden of
umbrellas blooms. a jazz funeral sometimes
is a million man march. a picket line for striking
writers becomes a rose bowl parade.
there is no letter i in rally or
in a mob or in a march
only many faces facing
forward. moonpies fly sometimes
bullets others. refugees and revelers
move and move and keep moving.
to causes with meaning worn away
because their souls are like faceless computers
waiting to be turned on for a cause
by a meaningless touch
that simply units them
that simply unites them
that simply pushes their button
and pumps the wheezing concertinas
