Poem Number 601
--- Jam & Bread ---
Jam and bread beats butter and peas
It's easy to fix and eat when I please
Grandma fixes it after my schooling
I walk in her door and start drooling
Sometimes I sit and eat it right there
Sometimes in the room under the stair
With each bite my mind wanders more
That I might someday live by a seashore
On a peanut raft with sails of cheese
I'd patrol the sea and charge high fees
With a baton to enforce and a cannon
You'll get extra big fines if you are Montanan
Then my mind starts to wander again
And I pretend I'm a bear, safe in his den
Hiding from a long winter's freeze full of snow
With an Injun tribe sharing my cave and a crow
Chief Long Gut says "how", the crow says "caw"
And I give a belch and lift my left paw
We all share the same glow and same day
And take rides in the snow on Santa's sleigh
The last few bites and my mind is a fever
I start think my jam bread is a woodland beaver
Or the jam might be made from jail brother's mushrooms
dancing on the ceiling are 12 dancing, white brooms
It's too fantastic to be explained in plain words
They are making wide arcs in two by twothirds
The visions are making my hands and neck shake
So, I run out the door and to the boat on the lake
Grandma is there with a grin and corn whiskey
She says the tide is high and sailing is risky
So, I take off her life-jacket and give the boat a push
A big wave crushes the boat and it crashes on a bush
And I fall over because the jam clogs up my veins
And everything's spinning and it starts to rain...
