Anne,

This is more than cool. You have a good flair for design as well.

Best regards.

Ann, Thank you for this page....I have often thought of
asking folks in chat rooms to "play haiku" with me, but
the moods of the rooms didn't seem appropriate....

Thanks for this page, Ann, it's a lot of fun.

Anne, this is great, i love seeing how far poems i strart can be taken
It really helps the wannabe poets that need a little more creative push, like me
thanx alot!

My thoughts are summed up in the words of others before me
about this page. It is one of, or the best page on the internet.

Ann It's nice to know somebody likes my poetry. I'm only 16 but people say I can write both stories and poetry very well for my age. I love your page by the way it's very interesting. Hope to see you either write new poems or contribute to my poems soon

Great work.. this is exactly the type of thing that

An old boyfriend and I use to write poems together.
We'd each write one or two lines then the other would write
the next ones. Thanks for allowing me to carry on
this pastime with millions of people around the world.

This is a lot of fun.
It's interesting trying to match your words to the beat and theme of another, while trying to make it seem like it all goes together.
Good writing exercise, and it's fun too.
Regina Garson, Magic Stream; garson@hiwaay.net

Anne: I am really enjoying these pages.
I've only recently started writing and have
a lot to learn. It's wonderful that the people
contributing to these poems are of all ages and
different levels of writing experience. The
creative interplay that I see in some of the poems
is very exciting. I also think it would be
interesting to have a section where whole poems
could be submitted for critique/appreciation.
These pages are very well-done .. congrats!

I, too, agree with the carrying of more than one active poem. I love this page, I have to wrench myself away from it to make it to class! The tardy's worth it. Thanx so much!!!

Hello Ann
I like your site very much, it's a great idea you had
but I find that some lousy guys spoil poems by fun
could you find a way to clean those stupid additions ?
I know but what I asked is not censorship (well a kind of!)
but it's a shame that tasteless guys can make such that mess

there so beautiful ideas on the other pages

well maybe you can put a special point for corrections
I'm sorry to annoy you about it but I feel sad when

I have been waiting for something like this--Congrats and hats off to you! I do agree that a serious poem gets contaminated by "ghouls" but this is OK w/ me as this seems to be what it is all about. Thank you for allowing the comments also. I too have a lot of fun "interacting" on the comments with others! it's great!there are so many poets, wheather novice or pro. who, I'm sure feel the same as I. I love this page, I just have a few suggestions. I'd really like to see a link added to a page discussing forms and conventions in poetry. Maybe even with a form of the week interactive section, like this week everyone submits a haiku and next month something in iambic pentameter. I think it'd be a fun way for novices to stretch a little, maybe explore something they hadn't thought to try before. Or/And maybe have some "famous" poems of the type being discussed up for discussion. There's been so much revived interest, for instance, in the beat generation poets (what with the coffee house scene and all). Maybe a link to the Alan Ginsburg page would be fun. There's soooooo much out there to tap into and poetry is experiencing a heady renaissance, I would really like to know more about what I'm writing. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's growing a little bored with blank verse. NOT that that's not a good thing, but maybe a little space to grow would be fun.

The problem happens when I write the start
to a poem on multiple lines and then feel
that I would like to make a change. I can't!!
Of course some argue poetry needs to flow free
and quickly and shouldn't be edited, but I'm a
digital poet and LUV my backspace key. Would
that be tricky to implement?
Anonymous, Lexington, MA "The shot hear 'round the world.";

Thanks for the suggestion. It is a little bit tricky, but I'm working
on something now. In a month or two we'll have a way to change poems
available to a few volunteers who will be able to remove graffitti-type
entries (funny, we haven't had any of those lately), and do changes that
people request in the commentary.

I was just wondering if you have some poets
who might be interested to write in french
or maybe you have some site you could direct me to.

Annie Sinclair, Montreal, Quebec; Veronik@cam.org

Annie--I don't know of any per se French poetry sites, but I do know that in Geocites--http://www.geocities.com there is a Paris chat room where I've often heard French poetry "recited."
Jen Keel, ; Blue Sun@wow.com

I've had an idea for another kind of interactive page! What do you think about an Interactive Story Page? It's just as creative and descriptive as poetry but it might appeal to those people in the world who are totally daunted by poetry!
Spider, Yorkshire, England;

This is the most fun I've had on the Net for a
while! What a cool idea, and I really like the
buff colored background. It's so restful.
Sunny Johnson, Taft, CA; coougarecho@taft.cc.ca.us

Spider, Yes, that would be lots of fun. There's a problem or two, though.
First, poetry takes less disk space than prose would. I'm not hampered now,
but may be in the future. Second, people would need to be able to change their
work more urgently than now, I think. Cool idea though! Someday, maybe...

This page brings people together in a new form

this page is one of the few network resources

This is one of the few pages I regularly visit..
to view poetry written by others and to contribute
by joining in on a poem or starting one myself.
The only disapointment is that its the same people
who get commented on. I never find my poetry
commented on which can mean a number of things, the
one I'm concerned with: is it that bad?
Maybe some of the "regulars" of this page should
comment on some of the newcomers' poetry.
I would love to come on one day to find my poetry
commented on.
Until then, I'm still checking.

thanks for the chance to read, comment, or contribute. Some feedbacks I'm sure come from people who have nothing to do but spread their bile, but I have always found poetry to be stimulating--particularly if it is difficult to understand. It is a vehicle of emotional outlet--generally sad. Keep up the good work all contributors. I'll be back.

Anne, I just found this page. This is such a great idea! I used to write poetry when I was younger.... out of the habit now... but this helps bring it all back. My daughter is also a published poet and is 16 yrs old. There are some who come in and mess up the poems and it makes some mad. I think that when you start something like this where everyone has access to it, then you can expect some idiots to come and screw it up. I guess we will just have to try and see the humor in it, and go from there.

Most people want to be poets more than they want to write poetry. Poetry is more than just the conveying of feelings. The best way to learn to be a poet is to read, write, experience, rewrite. And Show don't tell. Everyone thinks or feels, but it takes the true poet to translate everyday things into those feelings or beliefs. Read Mark Doty, Robert Bly, Gwendolyn Brooks, Lucille Clifton, James Dickey, among others to learn more.

My first reaction,as acynical old duffer is to suggest that some of your poets spend more time off-line. But that means I shall have to put a poem up for scutiny so I'll have to take it as well as dishing it out

Anne, I think this is a great page, I find it hard
to come off the computer once I start, but I do find
some of the comments can be very rude, and they often
go away from the point, people end up conversing
in the commentry boxes which should be only used for
feedback for the poet. If they want to have a
personal chat, they should go to a chat room. Other
than that this page is the best yet on the net.

If people are going to write poetry they should take it seriously. It is more than just a collection of feelings. If you read the masters you will see how it is so much more. Read a lot of poetry (Sylvia Plath, Lucille Clifton, Elizabeth Barret Browning, Robert Bly, David Mura, Jimmy Santiago Baca, Walt Whitman), write a lot and don't be afraid to make a ton of changes and rewrites. I have heard of poets working on a single poem for over a decade before they thought it was done. Good poetry takes time and there is enough crap being published out there. Get as much edjucation as you can. Whether it is formal or informal. You don't need to take a creative writing course. Learn from the masters. Read as much as you can get your hands on, and not just stuff you can get off of the NY Times best sellers list. And don't be too quick to show your poems. Sit with them for a bit and get to know your work, then show it. YOu don't need other people's opinions on how to write poetry. Most of the time they don't know what they are talking about anyway. The earliest poets did it by reading literature (old and new) and writing. I know it sounds kind of hard to believe, but that was how it was done. If you don't believe me read about Truman Capote or Hemingway. They just did it. And I can put my money where my mouth is. I have had about 10 poems published and the only way I learned was by doing it the hard way. Take care to you all and happy writing.

Dear Ann,
Thank you for the Interactive Poetry Pages. Is this your idea? It is totally new to me.
However, I am unable to figure how how to participate. In particular, how do I submit a poem which I think is complete: "solo"?
I'm not ready yet for collaborative poetry. I'll have to think on it, maybe meditate on it. How do I start?
Criticism and suggestions, I am already able to use. I participate in a poetry workshop here in Pittsburgh, where we take turns distributing copies and reading our poems. After each reading, we discuss the poem. I have always heard some good criticism, and usually made some revisions based on the suggestions.
Also, I am confused by the catagories one through five. Are we supposed to guess which level we are at?
I am reading and will be contributing my comments; I hope to contribute with poetry.
Love, Jon Robison

Jon Robison, Pittsburgh, PA, USA; jonmary1@juno.com

As I continue on my journey as a poet I am often reminded of the words my friend gave me "it is about necessity and truth." Write because you have too, not just because you can. Write because you are seeking truth. Don't just write about your feelings. So what if you feel. So does everyone else. Poetry is more than that. It is our faith, doubts, nature, introspection, joy, anger, memories, stories, nonsense, truth, lies, creation, destruction. Read lots of poetry. If you don't read poetry, then why should anyone want to read you? You got to learn from the masters if you want to speak in your true voice. They had to pay their dues just like you do. Finally: Revise, Revise, Revise!

Hi Ann,
Seems a big change in the people who use to
frequent this URL. Can't believe those who are
now using this web site continue to rebel against
a formal way to present thier poetry or should
i say in most a mass of words that surely come
from very troubled minds. When i went to school
commentary meant a discription of what took place
and in this case the poem that preceeded it. I
would teach them a bit of respect by banning them
after notifying them of their behavior. I have
noticed very little true critique of any poetry
or as previously mentioned a mass of troubled
minds. It would be nice if your programming
would some how torment them into following the
norm as it was meant. After all i believe that

It would be nice to be able to add more to our poems.

Life has sound, sight and emotion which poems capture ... poems need sound and pictures to match the words.

Can you provide us a way to add this to your site?

Thanks for this page. I am a poet finally coming out of my shell. I welcome any info that will help me take the necessary steps to being a published poet. Thanks again.
